About the Maker: Monoj Kumar Sardar
Monoj Kr. Sardar, son of late Khagendra Nath Sardar, was born in the year 1947. He has gained experience in musical instruments through their family tradition for the last four generation. He has gained experience through his practical knowledge and by training under his father. He has gained vast knowledge about various musical instruments. He places emphasis on quality control and only the best of seasoned wood is used for all instruments. MKS, as he is popularly known, makes some of the finest indian musical instruments. He is also the inventor of Sur Tanpura.
What is Swarmandal?
Swarmandal is a stringed instrument used for providing the drone during a song recital. It is a variation of the Santoor, which is of Persian origin, played with fingers. Although it is considered a minor instrument, as a class the harps are very old in India. This instrument, also known as SURMANDAL, is similar to the Harp in Western classical music.
The Swarmandal has 15 to 36 strings, but this number can vary. The artist performing on this instrument can use any of the strings for playing. Usually the singer uses the right thumb for playing this instrument.
What is Tanpura?
The Tanpura embodies the most fundamental and crucial concepts of Indian classical music. In Tanpura lies a proof that all the notes in Indian classical music including the sa are variable. The master musicians who understand the nuances of Tanpura can tune it differently as per the ragas they intend to perform - play or sing. Most Dhrupad musicians even today sing only to the accompaniment of the Tanpura in spite of harmonium and surmandal trying to take their place in most cases.

Sur Tanpura as the name specifies is a combination of two stringed instruments namely Swarmandal and tanpura. The best qualities of these two instruments are combined in just one instrument and hence it gives amazing sound quality. It has been crafted from Tun Wood and contains 4 Tanpura & 15 Swarmandal brass strings.
NOTE: It is advised to please open the packing of the instrument so that it gets aired and it stays in tune. Also, it is recommended to keep it away from extreme hot or damp area.
